Maintaining Health While Traveling
You can distinguish a seasoned business traveler from a first-time traveler. For someone traveling for the first time on business, it’s easy to overdo it while traveling. As a business traveler, you are an adult and trusted by your company to behave professionally while traveling on behalf of the company. However, it’s easy to let the thought of spending money and time in a distant city overwhelm you and allow yourself to lose control while traveling.
This type of overindulgence is precisely what seasoned business travelers will avoid. If you’re embarking on a long business trip, perhaps lasting several weeks and crossing several cities, the trip itself can take a toll on your health and well-being. The disruption to your normal lifestyle, the hard work, and the stress of making connections and moving from city to city can lead to fatigue, which can negatively impact and even lead to illness while traveling. And there’s no more unpleasant experience than getting sick while traveling for business and still having to carry out your duties despite your poor health.
Therefore, adhering to a few strict rules for a healthy lifestyle while traveling will pay off during your trip and make the hardships of traveling much less stressful. Much of business travel discipline simply involves establishing a daily routine that includes healthy activities so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy and ready for business each day. Some simple yet effective rules for a healthy business travel experience include…
Sleep routine. A good night’s sleep is something we take for granted. And achieving a well-rested state requires more than just a bed and an alarm clock. You have a routine at home that you use to prepare yourself for rest. Adapt that routine to life on the road and give yourself an hour before bed to prepare for rest and enough time to rest and sleep. Both are essential for good health.
Regular exercise. Most hotels have a gym or pool where you can stretch your muscles. Sitting in an airplane or conference room can cramp your muscles and prevent you from maintaining good flexibility. Even if it’s just a walk after dinner or some light exercise in the evening at the hotel, give your body some movement to stretch your muscles and get fresh oxygen into your blood.
Work breaks. For the sake of your mental health, take time for yourself. If you’re in a city with interesting places to visit, step away from the business side of the trip and head to the zoo, museum, or other tourist attraction to give your mind a break from the stress of business. And take a few hours in the evening to relax at the hotel and read a book or watch your favorite TV show. You need mental downtime to recuperate and process everything that’s happened during your trip.
Eat healthy. Don’t give in to the temptation of fast food. Look for restaurants that serve whole foods. Make sure you eat fruits, dairy products, vegetables, breads, and healthy proteins every day.
Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol, while enjoyable, is very draining on your body’s resources. Time spent drinking and recovering will tax your body, reducing your stamina and ability to stay healthy each day. So, avoid alcohol other than perhaps a glass of wine in the evening. You’ll be better off traveling if you watch your alcohol consumption.
Some of these ideas seem very simple. But if you’ve ever traveled for business, you know that sometimes simple necessities like a healthy diet and time for exercise and rest can be difficult to find in a busy work schedule. But if you prioritize your health while traveling just as you do at home, you’ll return home ready to tackle any issues at home without needing a lengthy recovery period.
